It is not been understood why women bite their lips, but it can be said that men love big, full and red lips which are a strong sign of good genetic quality. It is believed that when a woman bites her lips, she is mimicking a sign of arousal in primates. Male apes are attracted by females who upon arousal have blood rushing to the lips, giving it a deep red colour. This gives a signal of arousal and willingness to engage in sex.

When blood gathers in the lips it makes it look chubbier and redder, which signals reproduction ability and this stimulates the primitive instinct in a man. Biting the lips also implies that a woman is indecisive and looking for something. This arouses a man’s curiousness and he wants to know what you are thinking.

Biting the lips can be a flirtatious and sexy, since the bite emphasizes the fullness of the lips. For women it’s sort of a childish display, again, a tactic often used on men to evoke in them protective emotions.

There are many ways that a woman can show expression through her lips like puckering, pursuing pouting, licking and biting.

Biting the lips indicates indecision. It indicates that the woman is weighing her choices and is a way of stalling the words, before blurting out her choice. This gesture indicates that you have time to persuade her to make the decision that you prefer. You need to use your persuasive arguments as once a decision is made and verbalized, it is much more difficult to change. Biting can be of the upper lip or the lower lip. Biting the upper lip is not a pretty sight as our lower teeth are not as attractive as our upper teeth. Biting the lower lip has more sexual significance.

Biting the lips is similar to licking the lips. It signals nervousness and attraction. Licking the lips can either be comforting or stimulating depending on the mood. In the sexual lick, which is an intentional gesture, the tongue starts in the corner of the mouth, licking the upper lip and then the lower in a slow moving and sensual gesture. It aims to entice by emphasizing the juiciness and colour of the lips. Since it is also an erogenous zone, it is self satisfying.

This sort of licking is a bold move, revealing instantly the desire to “taste” that somebody who’s getting the message. As such, this kind of flirtation is kept for advanced steps of the courtship, when both parties know they’re into each other.

Licking the lips is also caused by nervousness. It releases the inner tension by stimulating the nerves in our lips. This sort of licking would be quick and partial. We automatically understand that licking the lips or pulling them would give away our insecurities, so we try to contain it. Like all tension signals, it’s often associated with telling a lie, but it’s not always the case. It means that whatever the person is saying is not quite sure about it, or is uncomfortable in this situation.

So, Thunder, next time your partner bites her lips, you know the meaning of the gesture.
