I am 19 and my girlfriend is very concerned about having sex with me. Can you please tell us how two virgins can go about it for the first time? We also want to avoid any chances of pregnancy.

There is no right age for sexual preparedness, even if one is legally an adult to have sexual activity. So if someone is 18+, it does not mean he or she is automatically ready for intercourse. One has to be emotionally, intellectually, and physically mature and wanting for sex. Especially when it comes to genital intercourse that involves risks like unwanted pregnancy and STD. Have both of you thought adequately about ways to prevent and manage the emotional, social, and physical risks that may come with being sexually active? This is not to dissuade you, but for both of you to understand that sex is a responsible act towards self and other person and hence both the partners should have the emotional and intellectual maturity to interact sexually in a healthy, equitable, and informed manner. Having sex to please their partner, to be seen as a cool, mature person; to get mind-blowing orgasmic pleasure; to control someone, and to guarantee a longer-lasting relationship does not work and may lead to heartache, regret, and spoiled friendship. Some people want to stay long enough with their partner to establish that trust in them and in the relationship to take it to the “next level”. Having a solid level of other sexual experience (masturbation, kissing, making out) also makes it easier to transition into intercourse.
