I am 19. I often get a lot of pain in my testicles. My family doctor told me that I have “blue balls”? Is this a serious condition? Why does it occur? Does having intercourse treat this problem?

Blue balls is a condition very commonly experienced by many normal young men. It is characterised by pain, discomfort and aching of the genitals, typically after the sexual arousal. While it could be quite uncomfortable, it is neither a disease nor is it harmful or dangerous. It occurs due to the pooling of blood (vasocongestion) in the genitals due to sexual arousal. It classically occurs when sexual arousal is not followed by ejaculation or orgasm, as the pooled blood in genitals then takes longer to leave the genitals when ejaculation does not occur. This can cause discomfort and pain, which can easily be alleviated by an orgasm / ejaculation. Ejaculation (orgasm) relieves the build-up of pressure due to this pooling of blood. Masturbation to the point of ejaculation is therefore the fastest, easiest and effective remedy to relieve blue balls. Blue balls is often an excuse that some teenage boys use to persuade their girlfriends into having sexual intercourse, claiming that the only way they can prevent the ache and pain of blue balls is to climax through intercourse. Girls need to know that they are free to refuse intercourse as boys can easily relieve themselves through masturbation.
