‘Fetish’, by definition is an obsession or a fixation on certain body parts or objects that are ordinarily not sexual in nature. People with fetishes have a ‘compulsive need’ to incorporate a particular body part in order to experience sexual gratification. ‘Foot fetish’ is one of the common fetishes. Fetishism is one of the most complex topics in sexology. It is not clearly known how fetishes begin, though most likely they are a myination of one’s genetic make-up (nature) and the experiences one had while growing up (nurture). If a fetish is acted out only in private, and if the person with fetish takes adequate efforts to satisfy his/her partner sexually as well as in other aspects of the relationship, he/she can even make a good partner. Fetish becomes a problem, when the fetishist gets obsessed over his/her fetish to the ‘exclusion’ of other forms of sexual activity. Psychotherapy has been proved to help fetishists deal with their desires, learn to accept themselves and make positive life choices. It is worrisome when a fetish is accompanied by other disturbing signs such as weak impulse control, obsessive- compulsive behaviour, low frustration tolerance or the inability to function normally at home, work or in society.
