I am a 17-year-old girl and have always been told that washing the genitalia with water helps prevent infections. However, I recently read that washing the genitalia can increase the risk of infection as it dilutes the acidic medium of vagina which kills the infectious micro-organisms. So I stopped washing except while bathing. For the past few days, I have been experiencing an unbearable itch in my vestibule. I have not trimmed my pubic hair for a long time. Can this be the reason behind it? I want to consult a gynaecologist, but my hymen is broken and I’m afraid that the doctor may find out. Can they determine the virginity of a girl with a single glance at the vagina?

It is possible that what you have read means that douching with water inside the vagina may reduce resistance against disease. Wash or wipe on the outside and over the lips of the vagina. After passing stools, wash backwards as this will prevent germs from the anus being brought forward to the vagina.
